Entrepreneur First 2016

My journey with EF ended on March 31st 2017. It was a great learning experience. Entrepreneur First is where the most ambitious and talented computer scientists and engineers build their companies from scratch. You don't need a team or fixed idea to apply. We help you find a co-founder, get customers, and raise funding from top investors. Our London program builds some of Europe's most exciting technology companies. We've supported hundreds of exceptional people from leading institutions. Now we're coming to Singapore, and I'm lucky to be part of the first cohort of EF Singapore!

The journey of building a startup is about learn from your failures fast. Here's my failures and it will serve as a reminder to myself and perhaps others who want a reference in future.

EF Ends

The last EF post was on 29th December 2016. Well, a lot has changed since then. I did update something in the “Failures” post on 13th January 2017. So my co-founder then decided that we were doing was not really his cup of tea. We tried pivoting, but couldn’t agree...

EF Post IC

It’s been awhile since the last post. We cleared IC, so that’s a good thing, but there’s still a lot of catching up to do. Many teams have a paying customer already, but we don’t. EF isn’t too worried about that, since what we are doing is arguably very hard....

EFSG1 Day 24

Time really flies. It didn’t even feel like 19 days had passed. I’m really enjoying this whole journey. It’s already week 4 and by now, teams should have settled down. I changed co-founders once and I am really happy with my co-founder now. My co-founder is ZW and he has...

Failures

Insert Quote by Famous Person I guess you get the gist. There are just so many quotes by so many famous people that I can’t possibly list them all. It’s okay to fail, but you have to learn from it. I document all my failures here as they come. Finding...

EFSG1 Day 5

We’ve come to the end of kick off week. I don’t really have much to blog about actually. But here’s what I liked: The team building process. Break-ups are encouraged. And it’s totally cool. The diversity here is great as well. As a result of diversity, there are so many...

EFSG1 Day 1

It’s the first day of EF! This is the first time everyone (almost everyone) will be coming together as a cohort. The new office is really cool. We have a long day of activities ahead. We started with Matt giving us an introduction of the history of EF and how...

Frameworks

It’s almost a month since the previous TGEF. Time passed really fast. It didn’t feel like it at all! Over the past 2 months, I’ve been really focused on customer development. I’ve found out a lot about the space of video analytics and natural language processing. When I say a...

TGEF 6

Today’s talk was on communication. In the startup scene, people are going to assume that you are not a very good communicator. More so when you’re someone technical. So if you communicate well, you basically have scored some points already. How do you communicate well then? Is what you say...

TGEF 5

Today’s talk will be on customer development and tech risk again. The strong emphasis placed on this shows that this is really important. Customer development can probably be broadly split into two stages. In stage one, it’s more exploratory. You go out and meet people and ask for advice. In...

Reconstruction

I’ve been exploring TensorFlow lately. I need to get better at it, as I think TensorFlow will have lots of features in future. Here’s an unsupervised autoencoder. I only trained it on a single example so it’s definitely overfitting. I just did it to prove that some code that I’m...

TGEF 4

Today’s talk was about customer development. The emphasis was really on talking to customers. It’s easy to build a start-up, but it’s hard to build a product people want. There are tons of stuff that people should want, but don’t want. For example, the job of a physiotherapist is to...

TGEF 3

TGEF was slightly different today. We didn’t have any talks in the morning, as we were meeting DPM Tharman Shanmugaratnam for lunch. I was really excited about it. The meeting was at the level 10 conference room at the Ministry of Finance. It was the largest conference room I have...

TGEF 2

EFSG holds an event every Friday, and they interestingly named it TGEF. TGEF stands for “Thank God Entrepreneur First”. It’s some acronym play on TGIF. This post is about the second TGEF held. I didn’t blog about the first one as I didn’t think of it, but I will from...

Entrepreneur First

EDIT: This post has been elaborated on. I will walk you through the entire process of my EFSG interviews. It might change in future. I’ll be writing my opinion of each stage, since I think it’s what most people will be looking out for. STAGE ONE The first part of...
